World Cup 2014 Group G Review – A Jog For Joachim ?

World Cup Group G consists of teams from Germany , Ghana , USA and Portugal and kicks off with the fixture between Germany and Portugal in Salvador on June 16th.

Hot favourites to win this group are Germany , seen by the football cognoscenti as the one team from Europe that possibly win this tournament when it is based in South America. Having only lost one game since August 2012  , having a strong squad and an experienced coach In Joachim Low is it easy to see why Germany are one of the favourites to win this tournament.

The German’s only current issue appears to be fighting off  series of injuries to key players  – Marco Reus will miss the tournament due to an ankle injury picked up in the friendly against Armenia and the experienced Lars Bender will also miss out due to a thigh injury. Added to that Low has witnessed key players such as Gomez  , Podolski and Ozil experiencing injury prone seasons with a result that in March he reminded his players that they need to arrive in Brazil in peak shape.

Even with injuries taken into account the German squad will be strong enough to progress through this group without too much trouble.

The second qualifying spot is more difficult to call , whilst the bookmakers in general support Portugal the other team in Group G , Ghana and USA are more than capable of giving Portugal a good game so it is not an easy call to nominate the second place team.

Portugal will be heavily reliant on Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo to carry them through this group stage – can CR7 do this single handed ? Whilst Portugal are a hard working team some of their squad have underperformed in their domestic leagues this year ( ask any Manchester United fan ) and need to raise their game to ensure that elusive second place.

Ghana , under coach Kwesi Appiah are a well organised but some would say ageing team , dependant on a defensive midfield run by Michael Essien and prone to bouts of losing concentration however on their day they are capable of giving both Portugal and the USA a good game so should not be discounted.

The fourth team in the Group , USA come to the tournament with little expectation even with German legend Jurgen Klinsmann as their charismatic coach .The USA defence looks reasonably well organised and has a solid ‘keeper in the guise of Tim Howard but you wonder who will score goals for them – the fate of the USA in this tournament could well fall on the shoulders of Messrs Dempsey and Altidore.

So who do the bookmakers fancy for group winners of Group G ?

Germany are clear odds on favourites at 8/15 generally but a slightly more favourable 8/13 with Bet365.

Second favourites are Portugal5/2 generally but a slightly better 11/4 with Stan James.

Third favourites with the bookies are Ghana11/1 with most bookies but a slightly better 12/1 with Stan James and Coral.

Outsiders USA come in between 10/1 and 14/1 with the bests odds at the moment 15/1 with 888bet.

( Odds correct at time of blog post – always check latest odds before placing a bet )

The Live Football Scores team cannot see a great deal of value for the win market but perhaps a small punt on the USA at 14/1 is worth consideration.
