World Cup 2014 Day 18 – The Mexican Wave ?

World Cup 2014 Day 18 is upon us with the third and fourth games in the “last 16” round with fans wondering if today’s games between The Netherlands and Mexico and Costa Rica and Greece will be as entertaining as Saturday’s games . On Saturday we had the excitement of a penalty shoot out between Brazil and Chile in a game played , as predicted by the Live Football Scores team at breakneck speed and in the other game between Colombia and Uruguay a great game with a wonder goal from James Rodriguez who we highlighted in yesterday’s blog post.

The first match today will be played at 1700 BST in Fortaleza between The Netherlands and Mexico . The Netherlands have played well so far and have shown that they can be tactically aware – the attacking style used to such great effect in the defeat of World Champions Spain was abandoned in their last group game against Chile where they sat back and tried to hit them on the counter attack. Many observers thought that they paid the opposition too much respect in that game but the plan worked and put them through as group leaders.

Their opponents today Mexico could well be the team that give The Netherlands their first real game of the tournament , they are well organised and play well together as a unit and at the moment have a ‘keeper in Guillermo Ochoa who is playing exceptionally well . The Live Football Scores team think that this game will be close but that The Netherlands maybe have more world class players in the form of Van Persie , Robben and Sneijder who should just give them the edge in this game.

In today’s second “last 16” game Costa Rica take on Greece in Recife at 2100 BST in what looks to be an intriguing clash of styles with an attack minded Costa Rica playing a very defensive, counter attacking Greece side . This probably will not be a game for the purists – Greece tend to park not one bus but two and rely on a counter attack , Costa Rica were the surprise winners of Group D and may find playing against Greece a problem as so far in this tournament they have not faced a team that plays so deep . Many neutrals would love to see Costa Rica go through to the Quarter Finals however Greece know how to play tournament football and should not be dismissed . In our humble opinion this match has extra time and penalties written all over it so don’t  expect a goal fest !
