League Two Review – Promotion and Relegation

The League Two season finished on Saturday 5th May with issues involving automatic promotion , play off places and relegation all being dependant on the results from Saturday’s endeavours .

At the top of the table one remaining automatic promotion place was still up for grabs – Swindon had sealed the Championship last weekend with an emphatic  5-0 win over Port Vale and Shrewsbury had also secured second place and automatic promotion with a 1-0 win on the same weekend against Dagenham & Redbridge.

Crawley secured the third automatic promotion place ( and a second successive promotion)  by recording a 1-0 victory at Accrington thus placing automatic promotion hopefuls Southend and Torquay into the play off positions .

Cheltenham were already in the play offs and were joined yesterday by Crewe who recorded a 2-2 draw at home with Aldershot.

This means that the play off places are occupied by Southend , Torquay ,Cheltenham and Crewe.

The play off matches are scheduled for 12th May ( Crewe v Southend ) , 13th May ( Cheltenham v Torquay ) , 16th May ( Southend v Crewe ) and 17th May ( Torquay v Cheltenham ).

At the bottom of the League Two table Macclesfield were already relegated after a 2-0 defeat by Burton last weekend . The other relegation spot was a straight choice between Hereford and Barnet.

Hereford recorded a great 3-2 home win over Torquay but this was not enough to keep them in League Two as their relegation rivals Barnet recorded a 2-1 away victory at Burton to ensure their survival and Hereford’s relegation along with Macclesfield to the Blue Square Bet Premier League.

So the League Two standings for 2011/12 Season are as follows :

Promoted : Swindon ( Champions) , Shrewsbury & Crawley

Play off Qualifiers : Southend , Torquay , Cheltenham & Crewe

Relegated : Hereford & Macclesfield
