League One – Promotion and Relegation

The League One season finished on Saturday 5th May with issues involving automatic promotion and play off places being the focus both being dependant on the results from Saturday’s endeavours .

At the top of the table one remaining automatic promotion place was still up for grabs – Charlton Athletic had clinched the title with a 2-1 win over Wycombe two weeks ago so with only two clubs going up automatically the focus was on the two Sheffield rivals , Wednesday and United to see who would accompany Charlton in the automatic promotion places.

Sheffield Wednesday recorded a straightforward 2-0 over Wycombe whilst promotion rivals Sheffield United could only manage a 2-2 draw at Exeter thus sending Wednesday up to the Championship with Charlton and United into the Lottery of the playoffs.

This means that the play off places are occupied by Sheffield United , Huddersfield , MK Dons and Stevenage – a fantastic performance by Stevenage , a 3-0 over Bury on Saturday giving them a play off place in their first season in League One .

The play off matches are scheduled for 11th May ( Stevenage v Sheff Utd) , 12th May ( MK Dons v Huddersfield ) , 14th May ( Sheff Utd v Stevenage ) and 15th May ( Huddersfield v MK Dons).

At the bottom of the League One table the four relegation places had already been decided with Rochdale the first team to be relegated on 21st April with Exeter City , Chesterfield and Wycombe Wanderers joining them on 28th April . At least Chesterfield will have the consolation of a trip to Wembley and the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy from this season’s endeavours .

So the League One standings for 2011/12 Season are as follows :

Promoted : Charlton ( Champions) , Sheffield Wednesday

Play off Qualifiers : Sheffield United , Huddersfield , MK Dons & Stevenage

Relegated : Exeter City , Chesterfield , Wycombe Wanderers & Rochdale
